Television’s king of snark, Joel McHale (Community, NBC), kicked off Ubisoft’s pre-E3 media event from the historic Los Angeles Theatre. While this was officially a “press-only” event, there were just enough fanboy yelps of excitement throughout the proceedings to make us wonder if maybe more than a few citizen gamers had managed to score a seat.
While Ubi did show off a wide range of games over the course of the show (including plenty of games for Microsoft’s Kinect), here are some titles that stood out.
After a dramatic trailer that had the crowd applauding, Ubisoft game producer, Vincent Pontbriand, talked the press through a first look at Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. Ezio’s back and he’s taking his friends to Rome to fight the Templar Order.
Ubi kept things moving with their next game demo, Shaun White Skateboarding. Inexplicably sitting on uncomfortable looking white cubes, White, McHale and game producer Nick Harper showed off this game’s insane ability to make a unique skatepark based on each player’s skills. And no. Shaun White’s hair was not subjected to motion-capture for the game.
Games designed for Microsoft’s Kinect included Motion Sports. While we’re not sure who would want to hang out with these people (we’re looking at you, Moustache Dude), we do know that Motion Sports looks very cool and fun for gamers of all skill levels.
Invisibility, shoulder-mounted rocket launchers and combat drones had the crowd cheering. Demo gameplay of the next Ghost Recon title looked slick and revealed that hey... Joel McHale likes to blow stuff up, just like we do!
According to Ubisoft CEO, Yves Guillemot, by the end of this year, his company will be launching a game that will allow you to learn to dance just like the King of Pop. While some might cry, “too soon,” we just wonder why we saw no gameplay, but rather, a live dance number. Just watch. You’ll see what we mean.
